# Free VPN privacy: what we protect and what stays in your hands

Free VPN encrypts traffic it carries between your device and our VPN server and changes the public IP destinations see. You can start the free tier without a Free VPN account, and we do not keep browsing-activity logs. System-wide Ad Block adds filtering across your apps. Account logins, browser identifiers, device security and third-party advertising remain separate privacy questions.

## How Free VPN protects your connection

When Free VPN is connected, supported traffic takes an encrypted route to the VPN server. This reduces what your local network can inspect and substitutes a VPN exit IP at destinations. It can be useful on a shared network or when you want an available VPN location for a supported task.

That connection is one part of a wider privacy routine. A website you sign into still knows the account you chose to use. A phishing page is still a phishing page through a tunnel. Keeping software current and using good account protection remain worthwhile even when the app reports a connected state.

We want the controls to be understandable. Regions changes the available exit location, Services selects an available activity route, and Ad Block filters known requests. None of those labels means that every part of your digital life becomes anonymous.

## Our no-logs, no-logins promise

**NO LOGS. NO LOGINS.** You do not need to create a Free VPN account, register an email or sign in to use the VPN. We do not log your browsing activity. Install the app, approve the VPN profile or connection permission, and connect.

On mobile, ads let you earn VPN time without paying for a subscription. If you prefer not to watch ads, an optional paid upgrade is available. The advertising and billing disclosures remain separate from our no-browsing-logs and no-login commitment; you can read those details in the linked privacy policy.

## Free access and advertising

No-account access removes the need to provide a Free VPN signup identity just to begin. It does not mean that your app store, a billing provider or every advertising service processes no information. Our mobile free tier is supported by third-party advertising, including services described in the privacy policy such as Google AdMob and IronSource.

Our App Store and Google Play privacy disclosures reflect how Free VPN operates. We follow the practices we publish in those listings and our privacy policy. Optional paid plans have their own purchasing and billing terms; no Free VPN signup is required to start free access.

Choose an optional paid upgrade if you prefer not to watch ads. Our no-browsing-logs and no-login commitments apply to both free and paid access.

## Ad Block helps with requests, not every identity signal

The VPN tunnel and Ad Block do different jobs. The tunnel changes the network route and encrypts carried traffic to the VPN server. Ad Block reduces known advertising and tracker requests when enabled. On the CLI, the documentation describes DNS-level filtering and controls for updating the list and viewing session statistics.

```sh
freevpn adblock update
freevpn adblock stats
```

Those statistics describe the feature's reported filtering activity. They do not prove that every tracker was blocked. First-party account activity, browser cookies, fingerprinting and ads embedded in allowed content can remain. Use browser privacy settings alongside the feature.

If a page or app stops working after a filtering change, check that setting rather than abandoning every privacy control at once. Our [Ad Block page](/adblock/) explains the layers, and the [Android guide](/guides/free-vpn-android/) shows how app filtering differs from request blocking.

## Know which traffic is actually in the tunnel

Android's Filter Apps or Bypass VPN control can exclude selected apps from the VPN route. That is useful when you deliberately want an app to use the direct connection, but it changes the protection boundary. A connected VPN indicator does not put excluded traffic back into the tunnel.

Connection-drop controls are also platform-specific. The Android release notes list Kill Switch and Always-on VPN; check your device's current implementation and settings. Use the connection controls and operating-system settings for your device.

A public IP check is a basic route check for that request. It is not a complete DNS, IPv6, application-exclusion or logging assessment. On desktop, `freevpn status` and `freevpn doctor` can help diagnose reported state by checking the connection, DNS and routing results.

## Make privacy choices you can maintain

Begin with the official app and a connection you understand. Review the free or premium access terms on that device. Enable the optional controls you actually need, and revisit exclusions or connection settings after a change.

Keep your browser and operating system updated. Protect important accounts with strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. If you intentionally sign into a service, remember that changing your IP does not make that session anonymous to the service itself.

For travel, use the [public Wi-Fi routine](/guides/vpn-public-wifi/). For product identity, use the [download verification guide](/guides/verify-official-vpn-download/).

## Privacy questions

### Does Free VPN keep browsing-activity logs?

Free VPN does not keep browsing-activity logs. Read the privacy policy for the scope and separate third-party advertising disclosures.

### Does no account mean no information is handled anywhere?

No. It means no Free VPN signup is needed to start. Stores, optional billing and the free tier's advertising services have separate relationships and policies.

### Does Ad Block stop every tracker?

No. It filters known advertising and tracker requests when enabled. Browser identifiers, signed-in activity and unrecognized requests can remain.

### Can a website still recognize me while connected?

Yes. A service you log into can associate activity with that account. Cookies and other browser signals can also remain even when the public IP changes.
